An Experiment Across Time and Genre
Alligator Houseparty is an experimental studio project going on expeditions into new genres with each new entry in our discography. Born from the wreckage of the retrograde sessions, we're on attempt number two at a debut album: ret.StrangPLANET.zip aims to be an expedition into electronica, with a bias towards retroVGM, 00s soundscapes, and saccharine elements. The goal is to capture the sound of an effervescent youth betwixt the gilded swansong of the analog world and the explosive birth of the great digital playscape. I remember being out of my bicycle at night, til late at night sometimes, and coming home and hiding my gameboy under the pillow; playing til the wee hours of the morning or reading dumb books under the covers by that same gameboy's light. Catching fireflies to the siren song of cicacas, the sound of bicycle chains & scaped knees, frogs singing in the creak. Lavender Town, the rumble of a Dualshock 2, and Dune. The goal is for this album to sound like that. We're producing the album entirely with freeware - primarily LMMS for beats and Audacity 4 for capturing live performances. The recording gear is pretty bare bones as well - a shure sm58, a behringer uphoria,
In June of 2026, I lost the device on which most of Retrograde was being produced and am starting over from scratch on LMMS. The new project, Strange Planet, takes what it can salvage from the retrograde sessions but intends to iterate with a more concise vision for the vibe, instrumentation and sound effect suite. I've decided to document and share my journey with Strange Planet, so that someone else might learn something from my trials and tribulations lol.
Alligator Houseparty is about getting better at music - songwriting, playing, producing, performing. We do that by regularly reinventing our sound, forcing us to write, produce, and play in new ways roughly every six to twelve months. Gives us more tools in the musical toolbox, you know?
